What are the first words out of your mouth?

19 May 2014 / by admin

When someone asks you what you do, what are the first words out of your mouth?

I have been known to open meetings with this very question… How many first impressions do you get? The answer will never change… Only one, so be prepared to respond with confidence, clarity and be memorable.

The best approach is to consider yourself to be in an elevator… 20 – 60 seconds is all you will have to capture their attention and start a meaning full conversation.

Work to develop your Elevator Pitch. Identify unique ways to communicate what you do. If you pump gas, what sounds more fun and would cause more conversation?

  • I pump gas at the station down the street, or
  • I am a Petroleum Distribution Technician, I help to ensure you do not get stranded.

What does your first impression sound or look like? A couple of other examples:

  • NOT: “I’m a consultant.”
  • INSTEAD – “I work with small to medium-size businesses to help them attract more clients than they could possibly handle.”
  • NOT: “I’m a Travel Agent”
  • INSTEAD – “I help people create memories that will last a lifetime”
  • NOT: I AM A FINANCIAL ADVISOR
  • INSTEAD: I help people understand their goals and create a financial roadmap to help them reach their retirement destination:.

20 – 60 Seconds is all you get… The IGAL Team meetings are a safe place to practice and plan for your Elevator Pitch. Be prepared, you only get one first impression and you never know when it comes. Planning forward will allow you to become more comfortable and successful.
